Do you want a resolution?

It’s 2016!! You know what you’re about to see all over social media, “New Year, new me” and all those other standardized tag lines. I’m already dreading logging into Facebook and seeing all the resolutions that will be null and void by the end of the month. I’m over it already because I’ve been there and done it! I don’t have enough fingers and toes to count the times I’ve said I’m going to lose weight, travel, save more money, or whatever. I’m tired of setting resolutions that I know I’m not going to keep, just because it seems like the thing to do. 

Why is it that we feel obligated to transform ourselves at the onset of each new year? Why can’t we transform mid year or in the second or third quarter? I get that the new year makes one feel refreshed and optimistic, but I think it would be better if people actually evaluated themselves before challenging themselves to change.

In the teaching profession we focus a lot on self-reflection. I know it might seem like a pretty clear term, but if you’re already looking at it that way then you’re looking at it wrong. Self-reflection not only involves looking inside yourself, but also challenging yourself to become better by improving your actions, interactions, circumstances, etc. Self-reflection is an active term.

This year instead of making silly resolutions, I’m going to challenge myself to self-reflection on a weekly basis. I think the easiest way for me to do this is to continue writing on this blog that way I have a consistent place I can go to that will help me stay on track with this challenge and allow me to look back on my thoughts. Challenge accepted!
